Welcome to the AEPS Interrater Reliability Certification for Three to Six Years. To complete this certification you will advance through a series of components that provide an opportunity to review your understanding of administering and scoring the AEPS Test and then demonstrate you are qualified to be certified as a reliable scorer. When you successfully complete the certification process, you will be certified as reliable for 3 years.

The Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System for Infants and Children (AEPS®) is a curriculum-based assessment for all children birth to 6 years that gives every child the best chance to make real progress toward developmental goals. AEPS was designed from the beginning to help all children make progress. The small increments of development on the AEPS Test and their seamless link to interventions in the AEPS Curriculum allow providers to accurately target and revisit children's needs and ensure they make progress. AEPS has been extensively studied since its beginning in 1974, and the AEPS Test shows high levels of reliability, validity, and other psychometric properties. The AEPS developers continuously research and field-test AEPS to ensure that it is the most effective linked system for children available today.

Components of the AEPS Interrater Reliability (IRR) Certification for Three to Six Years include:
  • AEPS Scoring Guide: This narrated slide presentation, with embedded video examples, provides a helpful review of important scoring rules and guidelines of the AEPS Test. You should watch the complete Scoring Guide before advancing to the next component.
  • AEPS Practice Test: The Practice Test simulates the actual type of test you will take to become certified. You must complete the Practice Test to advance to the Interrater Reliability Test itself. This practice will acquaint you with the format of the test and help you become comfortable with how you will navigate through the steps of test completion.
  • Pre-Test Reminders: Before you start your test, please review these instructions and items carefully. These resources will ensure you are prepared to complete the test.
  • IRR Certification for Three to Six Years Test A: You will watch a series of video clips (0:08-3:29 minutes in length) and score the child being observed on the pre-selected items from the AEPS scoring record form, known as the Child Observation Data Recording Form (CODRF).
  • Review Test A: After you complete Test A, you are immediately able to review your answers compared to the “gold standard” scoring for each item as determined by developers of the AEPS.
  • Certification for Three to Six Years: If you achieve agreement of 80% or higher with the gold standard scoring, you will be certified as reliable in scoring the AEPS Test. You will have achieved interrater reliability with the AEPS developers! A dated certificate with your name will be generated in the system that you can print or store in your profile in the Brookes Online Training LMS.
If you do not achieve certification with Test A, there are additional components to help you try again.
  • Preparing for Your Second Attempt: If you do not pass Test A, this component will become accessible to you. Here you will find helpful guidance for what to study and how to prepare before you attempt to take Test B. It is strongly recommended that you wait at least 2 months and follow the recommended steps for preparation before you attempt to take Test B. As part of your preparation, you can return to the Scoring Guide and Practice Test. If you fail Test B, you will have to wait a year before you can test for certification again.
  • Pre-Test Reminders: Before you start your test, please review these instructions and items carefully. These resources will ensure you are prepared to complete the test.
  • IRR Certification for Three to Six Years Test B: Test B also contains a series of video clips; however you will watch different content and score different AEPS Test items from those included in Test A.
